The Internet Underbelly

Profits From the Internet Underbelly

Dear Entrepreneur:

You can make a boatload of money with a product in the Internet’s underbelly. Today I’ll show you how to do it. My first underbelly product is related to the precious metals market.

I paid around $10 for it. I recently sold it for $1500! Try matching those returns in the stock market.

Granted, there are some “insider secrets” involved in this “underbelly” market.

But I’ll show you those secrets so you can avoid the pitfalls and start making money quickly.

Does that fictitious headline sound a little too much like reality for you? Trust me; I know from experience what it feels like to do your best to place a trade, thinking you’ve made a smart move, only to have the market knock the wind out of you, again and again. It certainly doesn’t give you much confidence to get back in the market.

Imagine knowing exactly what to do in the markets. Always. Every time. And imagine confidently trading from anywhere in the world – when you want to trade, and not because you have to trade.

Why do I say all this? Click below to find out.

What is This Internet Underbelly Market All About?

The market I’m talking about is Internet domain names…and without them the Internet would crumble like a house of cards.

The term domain name has several meanings but all of them refer to the same thing:

  • A name that identifies a computer or computers on the Internet. These names appear as a component of a website’s URL, like MarcCharles.com. This type of domain name is also called a hostname.
  • A domain name is the product domain registrars provide to their customers. Domain names are also referred to as registered domain names.
  • Domain names are used for other purposes in the Domain Name System (DNS) too, such as a special name which follows the “@” symbol in an email address, or a top-level domain name for commercial use like “.com.”
  • A name given to a host computer site on the Internet.

Domain names are the underbelly of the Internet.

The Great Domain Name Shift

By mid-2010 you’ll be able to replace “.com” with almost any word in a web page address!

This is the biggest change in Internet domain names in 17 years!

I’ll show you why it matters and how to profit from the new trend.

This shift enables entrepreneurs to secure domains like restaurants .newyork or carpenters.florida… and that’s just for starters!

Yes….domain name application can be rejected if it conflicts with trademarks or copyrights, like “Pepsi,” “Nascar,” or “Yankees.”

So a domain like books.amazon won’t fly.

In addition, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) said registrants applying for top-level domains must prove they have the ability to manage the domain name (because in some cases the traffic will be significant).

However, companies can hire a company to manage a domain name too (could this be another hidden business opportunity!).

Anyway, the big winners will be companies that sell domain names… not to mention domain registry affiliates and resellers!

Travel Light – Resell Domain Names for Quick and Easy Profit

Did you know you can resell domain name registration as an affiliate, partner or registered reseller?

It’s true. Now you can profit from domain registrations as an affiliate or “reseller.” I think you’ll like this business. The domain business is easy to understand and you can be up and running in a few minutes!

On top of that, there’s no inventory, and you won’t need an office, employees, in-depth knowledge or expertise and you’re not limited by geography.

Sure….you’ll need to cough up some money and a little time for direct marketing to get the word out and increase traffic to your registry website. But the investment will be only a fraction of what it takes in other businesses.

And best of all, a domain business can almost be run on “auto pilot!”

In other words, there is no babysitting, constant maintenance, or sophisticated technical skills required.

First of all, I want to do a quick overview of the Internet terminology that you need to know. Understanding these simple names and concepts will be invaluable in starting any type of Internet company.

What the Heck is a Domain Registrar?

A “domain name registrar” is an organization like Network Solutions or GoDaddy which has control over the granting of domains within certain top level domains (TLD), like.com, .org, .edu, .net, or country-specific domains like .ca (Canada), .jp (Japan), or .au (Australia), etc.

What is a Domain Registrant?

A domain registrant is a person or company who buys and registers a domain name with a company like Network Solutions or GoDaddy.

For example, John Doe (registrant) registers the name johndoe.com through an official registrar (like Network Solutions) who in turn writes the name to the central database or registry.

How to Become a Domain Registrant Reseller

It can be expensive to start a domain registrant business on your own. In most cases you’ll need $50,000 to $200,000 in working capital.

On top of that, you’ll need to pass a rigorous application process (red tape… I’m getting nervous).

That is why I recommend starting a domain registrant service as a reseller or affiliate. Believe me…this is NOT a step down.

Savvy entrepreneurs understand the advantages to limiting risk, cutting overhead and bypassing bureaucratic nightmares. In fact, launching a domain registrant services as a reseller is fast, easy, and you can be up and running in a few days (or a few hours in some cases).

A domain reseller service enables you to sell domain names to businesses and consumers on the Internet without the usual headaches, expenses, and red tape of owning the company.

On top of that, you won’t have to deal direct with customers. The parent company will do this for you! This is one of the most attractive features for me.

Most reseller plans give you everything you need to build your own successful reseller business. This includes a turnkey website, shopping cart, and credit card processing! This is a big deal!

Let’s say you developed your own reseller website, built your own integrated an electronic shopping cart which offered credit card processing (in multiple currencies mind you)… it would cost a couple of thousand dollars (or more).

The cost savings of becoming a reseller or affiliate are pretty significant.

Domain Name Reseller Programs Usually Include

  • Your own storefront website
  • 24/7 product support for your customers!
  • Automated billing & renewals on dozens of different products (in addition to domains!)
  • Marketing Tools – including ad copy, sales letter templates, Google AdWords advice, forums, and more
  • Assistance to help draw traffic to your site
  • Search engine optimization for your domain reseller website (to help your company rank prominently in the top search engine result pages)

Once your domain reseller website is live, the focus is to obtain targeted traffic.

But get this…. domain registration is relatively simple to market on the Internet.

Most of the prospects that come to your website already know what a domain is and how to register it. Most of the time people are looking for the best price, great service and “over the top” support (to answer questions).

Registering a domain name is easy and only takes a few minutes to complete.

But the best part is……

Your domain registration website will do all of the work for you! Prospects will be able to search for available domain names in the ICANN database with ease on your site.

When a prospect finds a domain name they want to register, they’ll simply click a link or button to “Register It.”

Then….the domain buyer will be redirected to the parent company’s website, and the parent company will manage the actual purchase transaction (and they’ll follow-up with your customer too!).

In my book…..that’s a sweet business!

I recently showed L.B. this business, and she launched a domain registrant reseller business in just a few minutes. L.B.’s domain registration website uses bright, festive graphics, testimonials, videos and more.

In this week’s issue I’ve enclosed some top domain registrant companies who offer reseller programs.

How to Profit from a New Cyber-Squatting Trend

Do you recall the domain-squatting “Gold Rush” of the late nineties?

I do.

Entrepreneurs scrambled to secure domain names like TheNewYorkTimes.com, Sears.com, CBS.com, TheWhiteHouse.com, and tens of thousands of others.

Most companies were clueless to what was going on. I remember it as if it was yesterday. This was referred to as “cyber-squatting”. In the late 90’s most companies did not have a clue what a domain name was or why it was needed.

Eventually, tech savvy gurus in corporations caught on and crushed domain entrepreneurs with legal and trademark infringement hell storms.

There’s nothing wrong with securing misspelled trade names, brands, names of popular websites, or anything else for that matter.

Do you know what that means?

You can purchase (or sell as a domain registrant) misspelled domain names.

You can also redirect traffic to these misspelled domain names (and websites) and get paid for running ads on these sites. Sweet!

In other words, there are programs on the Internet like Google’s AdSense, Yahoo! Publisher and others which pay publishers for running advertisements on websites.

A Unique Domain Produced Millions in Profit

Every country has a unique identifier in the domain registry on the Internet.

Most of us know that “.com” (dot com) is an identifier which signifies a commercial domain, usually some sort of business.

A domain which ends in “.org” is an identifier that signifies a non-profit organization.

And, of course, a domain which ends in “.edu” is an identifier that signifies an educational institution.

But every country has an identifier, too.

The United Kingdom is “.uk,” Japan is “.jp,” and Australia is “.au.”

But do you know what the unique country identifier is for the West African country of Cameroon?

You guessed it… “.cm” (dot CM)!

The reason this domain name extension was a big deal is because millions of people MISSPELL “.com” every month!

At some point I’m sure millions of people have mistakenly entered “.cm” into the search field when they type a website’s URL into a browser.

Kevin Ham, an entrepreneur from Vancouver, British Columbia, jumped on the opportunity.

A few of years ago, Ham met with government officials in Cameroon and pitched a unique idea.

He worked out a deal with the Cameroon government to redirect all of the traffic from .cm that was not a registered domain name in that country to a site called Agoga.com.

Agoga.com is referred to as a “hit bank.”

When you look around the site, you’ll notice it looks like a search engine or a directory… with one difference.

Agoga is filled with “sponsored results.” The “sponsored results” are actually Pay Per Click (PPC) ads! When someone clicks on an ad, it generates pay per click revenue for the publisher, in this case Kevin Ham.

Today, Kevin controls hundreds of thousands of domain names (many of them misspelled) and generates more than $70 million a year in revenue.

How to Make Money with Typo-Squatting

The strategy is to secure misspelled domain names and redirect the traffic to a “hit bank.”

The next step is to post pay per click ads on the landing page or “hit bank” as Sponsored Results, similar to what Kevin Ham did.

But I think it’s important to add your ideas and personality to the project. This will help your website and project stand out from others trying to capitalize on this opportunity.

Google’s AdSense, Yahoo! Publisher Network, or Turn.com are three programs available to help you earn money when people click the Sponsored Results ads on your site.

If you secure a popular, easily misspelled domain name like: “yutbe.com” (YouTube), “yspce.com” (MySpace), or “fcbook.com” (Facebook) the potential for significant traffic exisits.

Granted, not every domain, misspelled or otherwise will generate windfall profits. But this is a great tactic to add to your Internet arsenal.

Here’s the downside of this opportunity…..

The major search engines are looking for ways to thwart typo-squatting.

It’s no secret there are unscrupulous people luring visitors to scams, e-mail capture nets, malware and other insidious tactics by using typo-squatting.

But typo-squatting is NOT illegal or unethical!

Most of the traffic generated by misspelled domain name URLs is redirected to legitimate web-based businesses.

What’s more, search engines are not likely to refuse a major source of advertising revenue any time soon! Pay per click is a multi-billion dollar business!

However, new web browsers (like Mozilla Firefox) have built-in spell check features for the URL address bar. This can and does eliminate some aspects of misspelled domains and type errors.

But most Internet users are not incorporating sophisticated browsers or other software so this web browser feature is not relevant (yet).

Today, typo-squatting is a viable way to drive traffic to a landing page or “hit bank” and earn revenue at the same time.

********** Action Plan***********

This is a simple web-based business.

Here are a few ways to get started quickly:

1) Find a legitimate domain reseller program. I’ve enclosed links to ten companies. But there are hundreds of companies out there

2) Sign up as a reseller partner. Read and understand the frequently asked questions section (FAQ).

3) Get your domain reseller website up and running. A lot of companies provide free domain reseller storefronts and host them for a nominal fee. This websites enables people to make domain purchases and registration on the Internet quickly and easily.

If you can afford a unique domain for your reseller website do it. This will help build awareness of your business and it’ll help in getting free search traffic. For example, a unique domain for your business could be TheDomainSuperstore.com. Unique domains and title pages aid in getting prominently ranked in the top search engine search result pages – this means free traffic!

4) Set up a keyword advertising account with Google, Yahoo!, or ABCSearch.com. Keyword advertising is a get way to jumpstart your Internet Granted, thousands of entrepreneurs are already doing this – but so what? You’re a savvy entrepreneur….go one step further. Ask Google or Yahoo! keyword advertising consultants to help grow your domain registration business.

Most people spend a lifetime trying to figure out how keyword advertising and pay per click advertising works.

Why not ask Google and Yahoo! to help you! In most cases, search engines and PPC networks over this service free of charge!

5) Optimize your domain reseller website. There are thousands of companies offering search engine optimization services (SEO). Read testimonials and ask current customers what they think. Three SEO services I recommend are ebrandz.com, oneupweb.com and bruceclay.com.

6) Advertise to qualified prospects only! This means advertising in email newsletters, websites, forums and blogs which reach webmasters, developers, eBusiness site owners, and Internet entrepreneurs. Four places I recommend are SitePoint.com, SEO-News.com, SiteProNews.com and Bravenet.com.

This is a great web-based business for start-up entrepreneurs.

Heck….

It’s a great business for seasoned entrepreneurs too!

Alexa’s Global 500 is a great place to start.

The bestsources for high traffic misspelled domains are the financial, travel, and online gaming areas. Political names and issues (like misspelled variations on “immigration.com”) are also good sources of traffic.

If you have a site, and you’ve secured a typo domain, you can redirect traffic from the typo domain to your site.

You can also set up a “hit bank” and run Google AdSense (or any similar pay per click program) on it – like Kevin Ham did. This enables you to earn money when someone clicks on an advertisement.

What’s more, there’s a huge aftermarket for domain names, so you could buy and sell domains for profit without having to even launch a website!

Have fun.
